UNEP AND HYPREP ORGANIZED TECHNICAL SESSION FOR REMEDIATION CONTRACTORS AND ACCREDITED LABORATORIES

The United Nations Environment Programme, (UNEP) and the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) are insisting that remediation contractors and laboratories where samples are analysed should adhere to best practices in their operations as Ogoni deserves the best in the Federal Government’s commitment to clean the environment and restore the livelihood of the people.

This disclosure was made at the technical session organized for remediation contractors and accredited laboratories, by HYPREP and UNEP on implementation of Key Technical Components of the Phase 2 Remediation Works, which was held at the Project Coordination Office (PCO), on wednesday 23rd May 2024.

Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, said the session provided an opportunity to review methods and discuss challenges in the remediation works, while charging contractors and laboratories to be ethical in their data collection methods and related remediation activities.

Prof Zabbey reiterated HYPREP’s commitment to working closely with the contractors and relevant stakeholders to developing a remediation template for the rest of the Niger Delta.

Earlier both UNEP’s Mike Cowing and Gerrant William made presentations on Key Scientific Technicalities in the Implementation of the Phase 2 Remediation Works, stressing the need for strict adherence to best practices in the remediation works in Ogoni.

The meeting was attended by the contractors for the Medium Risk Sites (MRS) and laboratories, NOSDRA, NUPRC, RSMEnv, SPDC, SDN, CERHD and SWAYA.
