NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SCORES HYPREP ’80 PERCENT’ ON PROJECT DELIVERY.
The National Assembly has scored the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) ’80 Percent’ in its implementation of projects and programmes in the Ogoni Cleanup Programme.
The latest rating is coming from the House of Representatives Committee on Host Communities, after a two-day oversight visit to HYPREP projects in Ogoni.
Chairman of the Committee, Rt. Hon. Dumnamene Deekor, representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency, who led members on the visit, expressed satisfaction with the significant achievements of the Project, particularly in the areas of provision of potable water, with solar facility, sustainable livelihood training for 2400 Ogoni women and youths, job creation, public health interventions, Ogoni Power Project, construction of the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration(CEER), environmental remediation and mangrove Restoration.
Furthermore, the Committee said the visit has afforded them the opportunity to see first hand, HYPREP’s effort in Ogoni. While acknowledging the direct benefits of the Project to Ogoni people, the Committee is urging them to own, protect and maximise the opportunities therefrom, further dissuading detractors to desist from discrediting HYPREP’s efforts, and spreading misinformation.
Meanwhile, the Committee has hinted of its plans, working with the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Environment and HYPREP to initiate a bill that will give legislative impetus for the sustainable cleanup of Ogoni and other impacted states in Nigeria. It also promised to resolve the lingering issue around the fenced off remediation site in Ogale.
Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, Project Coordinator of HYPREP, while lauding the Committee for the visit and its high performance rating of the Project, noted that this has further strengthened its focus, resolve and commitment to deliver on all its projects and programmes.
Some representative projects visited include, CEER, Ogoni Power Project, 100 Bed Ogoni Specialist Hospital, 43 Bed Cottage Hospital in Buan, K.Dere Water Station, ongoing Yeghe water station, Mangrove Restoration Sites in Bomu and Bodo, Model Primary Health Centre, Onne, and Livelihood training Centres for Software Development/Animation, Cybersecurity in Port Harcourt and land remediation site in Ogale.
The visit, therefore reaffirms the Federal Government’s continuous commitment to the Ogoni Cleanup Programme and further dispels unfounded claims about the Project’s alleged non-performance.
On the side line of the visit to the Mangrove Restoration Site in Bomu, PC Zabbey met with Suoyo Enenimiete Mercy, the Miss Earth Nigeria, 2026. Enenimiete’s advocacy is on restoring and protecting the Nigeria’s mangrove ecosystem.
