The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) actively participated in the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11–22, 2024. The event, which brought together global leaders, policymakers, and environmental stakeholders, provided a platform to address pressing climate challenges, including sustainable development, nature-based solutions, and equitable climate finance.
HYPREP’s delegation, led by the Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, highlighted the organization’s pioneering work in environmental remediation and ecosystem restoration, with a particular focus on its mangrove restoration projects in Ogoniland, Nigeria. These initiatives, central to HYPREP’s mandate, were presented as tangible examples of integrating environmental sustainability with community resilience.
In line with COP29’s emphasis on inclusivity, renewable energy transition, and climate resilience, the delegation engaged with international stakeholders to explore collaborative opportunities. Discussions centered on advancing the restoration of oil-contaminated sites, leveraging innovative technologies, and securing climate financing to scale up remediation efforts and enhance socio-economic benefits for affected communities. HYPREP’s presence at COP29 highlighted its role as a leader in addressing environmental degradation while contributing to global climate solutions. The insights and partnerships gained from this conference will support HYPREP’s continued efforts to align with international climate goals and expand its impact on ecosystem restoration and sustainable development
