Public Health
A health impact study is a component of the recommendations UNEP made in its 2011 report submitted to the Federal Government of Nigeria on Ogoniland. The study is to establish whether there is a link between oil spills and disease patterns in Ogoniland. The project has taken steps to conduct medical outreaches as well as Health Situation Analysis in Ogoniland to generate preliminary data for the study. Thousands of Ogoni people benefitted from the medical outreaches that provided treatment for general ailments and conducted minor and major surgeries.
The strengthening of one General Hospital in each of the local government area of Ogoniland is ongoing
Construction of specialist hospital is ongoing at Kpite in Tai LGA.
The Ogoni Specialist Hospital which will specialize in pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology (O&G), will also offer treatment for other critical medical disciplines like ophthalmology, cardiology, orthopedics, dentistry, oncology, and emergency medicine. The hospital will also have staff housing and other auxiliary and support buildings needed for research, training, and care for prevalent diseases in the region. As a result, HYPREP’s OSH could significantly improve local healthcare delivery and serve as a legacy project for public health research and healthcare provision. Additionally, it will boost public confidence in the local healthcare system.
