HYPREP CALLS FOR UPSCALING MANGROVE RESTORATION FOR EFFECTIVE CLIMATE MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION AT COP30 IN BELEM, BRAZIL.
The Project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, featured as a distinguished panellist at the Restoration Day event titled “Scaling Restoration as a High-Integrity Nature-Based Solution: From Policy to Finance and Action.”
The event, held on Tuesday, 18th November, at the ongoing Conference of the Parties (COP30), was convened by the Brazilian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, WWF, and the Global Partnership on Forest and Landscape Restoration (GPFLR).
As a flagship event of the COP30 Action Agenda, the Restoration Day brought together government leaders, international organizations, financial institutions, civil society, and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities to spotlight ecosystem restoration as a central pillar of global climate and biodiversity action. The event underscores landscape restoration as a high-integrity, scalable, and investable Nature-Based Solution, connecting policy, finance, and implementation to accelerate delivery towards 2030 targets.
During the panel session, Prof. Zabbey presented the progress of HYPREP’s Mangrove Restoration Project, highlighting the role of mangrove ecosystems in carbon sequestration, opportunities for carbon credits and sustainable financing, equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms that ensure communities derive value from restoration efforts, and the importance of stakeholder inclusion, community capacity building, and local ownership for long-term conservation benefits.
Earlier in the day, the Project Coordinator accompanied the Honourable Minister of Regional Development and a member of the HYPREP Governing Council, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, as the Ministry of Regional Development, launched the ministry’s Integrated Climate Action Plan (ICLAP MRD) in a side event at the Nigeria Pavilion.
