PUBLIC HEALTH

Investigations and evaluations of the nature,
scope, and scale of impacts of hydrocarbon pollution on the health
of the Ogoni people, and programs to monitor, mitigate and remedy the impact.

A health impact study is a component of the recommendations UNEP made in its 2011 report submitted to the Federal Government of Nigeria on Ogoniland. The study is to establish whether there is a link between oil spills and disease patterns in Ogoniland. The project has taken steps to conduct medical outreaches as well as Health Situation Analysis in Ogoniland to generate preliminary data for the study. Thousands of Ogoni people benefitted from the medical outreaches that provided treatment for general ailments and conducted minor and major surgeries.
